Earth Day Panel, The Roadless Rule

Did you know that nearly one-third of all roadless lands are within 30 miles of a national park?

Right now, the Trump administration is moving to eliminate the Roadless Rule, a landmark conservation safeguard that protects 58.5 million acres of national forest land, including 2 million acres here in Washington.

To defend these public lands, NPCA is organizing an Earth Day panel discussion to help the public understand the value of the Roadless Rule and how people can advocate to protect it. You’re invited to come learn what’s at stake and how you can take action to defend America’s wildest public lands.

The Roadless Rule has long protected some of our most intact forests by preventing new road construction, large-scale logging and mining. These places safeguard clean drinking water, support wildlife, and offer unmatched opportunities to hunt, fish, hike and camp. At the same time, our national forests already contain thousands of miles of roads that are not fully maintained and provide more than enough access for industry.

In Washington’s North Cascades, roadless areas include iconic places like the Sawtooth and Liberty Bell, home of the Golden Horn and, critical grizzly bear habitat, much of it directly adjacent to North Cascades National Park. Large, connected landscapes like these are increasingly rare and uniquely valuable, and Washington communities benefit from them every day.

The panel will feature Betsy Robblee of the Mountaineers, Puget Sound Biology Associate Professor Carrie Woods, and past park ranger Lia Brewster with the Sierra Club, in discussion moderated by Graham Taylor of the National Parks Conservation Association.
