I support designating the Frances Perkins Homestead as a national monument to honor the life and achievements of Frances Perkins.
As Secretary of Labor during Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s presidency, Frances Perkins was a trailblazing woman and a tireless advocate for American workers. It is time to celebrate her life and legacy with a national park site.
Perkins was one of the driving forces behind the New Deal, and established many of the workplace protections Americans enjoy today. She was the first woman ever to serve in a presidential cabinet, one of the longest-serving cabinet secretaries in history, and a trusted advisor to President Roosevelt. At a time when America struggled through economic hardships, Perkins’ and her leadership had an immeasurable impact on millions of Americans. Her story should be shared with all, for future generations to know in perpetuity.
A national park site celebrating Frances Perkins can serve as a powerful reminder of her grit and determination to improve the lives or working Americans and children. The Frances Perkins Homestead in Newcastle, Maine is the only place dedicated to telling her story, and the Frances Perkins Center stands ready to donate the homestead to the National Park Service to better preserve and interpret her legacy.
Please use your authority under the Antiquities Act to designate the Frances Perkins Homestead as a national monument to celebrate the life and legacy as a powerful and influential American icon.
