National Parks Conservation Association

Pledge to continue to support and protect the Western Arctic caribou, Alaska Native communities and Alaska’s spectacular parklands.

Together, we have protected Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve from a devastating industrial mining road. Defeating the Ambler mining road took a courageous coalition and years of hard work from people who care deeply about the lands and communities of the Brooks Range. These lands are important to all Americans, and they are a matter of life and death for the nearby Alaska Native communities.

After decades of work, we are standing as united park advocates all over the country. Join us in protecting and preserving the beautiful parks of Alaska.

  • A victory for wildlife. This part of Alaska is home to some of the most rare, unique, and spectacular wildlife in the world. It provides habitat for caribou, moose, wolves, salmon, and is the only place on Earth where black, brown, and polar bears all live.

  • A victory for water. This road would have cut across 3,000 streams and rivers that fish and wildlife rely on. These are some of the last clear, running streams in the US that have remained untouched by human development.

  • A victory for people. Alaska Native villages sit downstream from the mining district this road would have created. The road and activity on it would have polluted the air, water and wildlife in the area – threatening entire communities that have been living off the land for generations.
